ON CAMPUS
SWE at UIUC: On Campus: Outreach Committee

New Program: SWE ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Do you want to help make a difference in the life of a disadvantaged high school student? The Outreach Committee is looking for volunteers to be pen pals with high school students in inner-city Houston, Texas. Our SWE section was asked to create this program by a UIUC Engineering alumna and SWE member, Therese Rogers, who is currently teaching high school algebra in Houston as part of the Teach for America program. She is looking for pen pals who use math constantly in their everyday lives to show her students the importance of learning math skills. Your goal as a pen pal will be to urge the students to keep up their studies, tell them about your experiences as a college student in engineering, encourage them to consider an engineering major and give them guidance through the process of applying to college. If you are interested, please e-mail Sarah to get a pen pal!

Outreach Committee

The goal of the Outreach Committee is to get more girls interested in science and engineering. Women have many great opportunities for successful and exciting careers in engineering, and we need to get the word out! The Outreach Committee has three main events for the spring semester: the Girl Scout Workshop, the EOH Breakfast, and Take Our Daughters and Sons To Work Day. This year we will also have an exhibit at EOH demonstrating how CNC machines work. In the fall, we do For Kids Only presentations at local elementary schools to get kids interested in science and engineering. All of the Outreach activities are a lot of fun, but we also need a lot of volunteers to keep them going, so if you are interested in any of the following activities, get involved! Come to an Outreach meeting or e-mail Sarah.

FALL EVENTS

For Kids Only

In the For Kids Only program, SWE volunteers visit local elementary schools to give presentations and help kids work through hands-on activities related to science and engineering. This program is aimed at interesting elementary students in science and engineering at an early age. FKOs may take place either during normal class time or as part of an after school program.
