Proposed budget in PDF format
The minutes in PDF format
| This meeting was held in order to discuss the impact of a smaller budget than anticipated for spring, the efficacy of the monthly lunches, and relations with undergraduate SWE. The agenda, the tentative events, the proposed budget, and the minutes can be found on the left.
Executive summary
The monthly lunches were canceled and replaced by sponsored networking dinners due to low attendance at lunches and high attendance at sponsored dinners. In order to integrate graduate students and undergraduate students, events across SWE, not only in the Graduate Committee, need to consider interests and schedules of graduate students. In particular, the committee recommends offering clear professional development opportunities, job search assistance, and personal support and outreach opportunities in a professional way. As not all SWE events lend themselves well to this, the committee calls other SWE committees to consciously consider whether an event is intended for both graduate and undergraduate members or only one of the groups.
The committee wants to re-request to the Executive Committee that general meeting speakers get knowledge of that graduate students may be in the audience.
The Provost is confirmed for April 22 for the banquet. After discussion, the committee decided to request her to speak on the topic of “Five skillsets to develop in a bad economy”.
As a separate professional development event, Greg Lambeth was suggested as a speaker on advisor types, building off of his segment in the Graduate College workshop on dissertation writing.
Nicole will pick a date for the Useful Software workshop and put it together.
After discussion, the committee suggests a informative multi-speaker event featuring “A day in the life of a first-year graduate student, a postdoc, someone in between.” |
